By eight-thirty depart for a long-tailed boat journey to
the Karen village of Ruam Mitr to
ride elephants. The terrain is hilly on the two
hours trip and one enjoys a spectacular view of the mountains
surrounding Chiang Rai. Once across the ridge descend to a
Yao hilltribe village
where our vehicle picks you up for a picnic lunch at our
hilltribe cottage by a mountain stream. Visit other hilltribe
villages in the area and return to Chiang Rai in late

Morning visit the beautiful Wat
Phra Keo where one of Thailand's most important
Buddha statues was discovered in 1444. The statue had been
moved by various state rulers to be placed in their respective
capitals as a symbol of dominance, including Lampang, Chiang
Rai and Vientiane before finally begin enshrined in Bangkok's
Wat Phra Keo during the reign of King Rama I. Then visit the
Rai Mae Fha Luang is a
museum exhibiting ancient artefacts and written records on
history, literature and indigenous intelligence as well as
exhibits on royal activities by the late Princess Mother at
Doi Tung. Continue to

Morning visit Wat Phra That Chedi
Luang a 13th century temple built by the 3rd ruler
of the Lanna kingdom in the early 13th Century. The temple is
constructed of classic Chiang Saen.
Continue to the Hall of Opium
at the Golden Triangle Park, the 5,600 square-meter Hall of
Opium carved into a hill presents the history of opium from
its natural properties to its use as long ago as 5,000 years.
It traces opium's global journey through trade routes in the
age of imperialism, culminating in the Opium Wars. Continue
for lunch at local restaurant.
Depart for the northernmost town in Thailand
Mae Sai is separated from
the Myanmar town of Tachilek only by a bridge. The town is a
bustling place with traders selling their wares from
handicrafts to gems and jade items – mostly made in Myanmar. |
